Key West
A trip to the real south
An impromptu roadtrip South
Growing up in Florida, I was fortunate to discover Key West's magic as a teenager. I rediscovered that magic as an adult. It was a treat to introduce one of my favorite places on the planet to my husband, my favorite person on the planet.
We decided a week earlier that we would celebrate our 3rd wedding anniversary in the keys. We left early Friday morning for a long, satisfying drive south and planned to drive back on Monday.
Key West, a place apart
Once you get to the keys you can't help but feel detached. Not only do you not feel like you're in Florida anymore, you don't even feel like you're in the United States.
Unlike most vacations spots where time whizzes by, in the keys time slows down. There is time for everything. In the southern most part of the United States Rush is a band, not a state of existence. In 4 days we found ourselves with time to do everything we wanted and more. We lounged around. We explored on bicycles. We drank and ate, a lot. We took naps, swam, and went fishing. We talked with as many locals as we could about their lives and what brought them to the keys.
Speaking of fishing and mingling with locals, we caught our fair share of mahi mahi on a charter fishing trip with a local. We learned to spot mahi mahi by the flyfish buzzing on the ocean's surface. We also learned not to immediately reel up a caught mahi into the boat but rather to wait and keep it in the water next to boat. Each time we caught one, at least two others would swarm next to their snagged mate. I actually caught two of them right next to the boat with this trick!
Our captain recommended we take our catch to Conch Republic where they would fry it up for us. We did and it was one of the best meals I've ever had in my entire life.
Changes in Latitudes, changes in attitudes
We discovered Latitudes for a late lunch / early dinner via a Facebook reccomendation. We had to make a reservation because it saves your seat on the short boat ride you take to get to the island restaurant. The views, the food, and the service was all exceptional.
The view from our table along the shore could trick you into thinking you were dining alone on the beach. We even saw a nurse shark swimming just a few feet from the shoreline.
If you do one thing while you're in Key West, make a reservation and order the key lime pie daiquiri at Latitudes. It will change your life.
exploring history & hideaways
There is so much history rooted in Key West. Beyond the Hemingway Home, which we loved, there are endless stories to take in. From epic fish tales and survivals on the sea, to deadly hurricanes, and the rich lives of the many who shaped Key West culture over the years. Key West overflows with narratives worth learning.
We especially liked the Key West Art & Historical Society Museum. It's convenient to pop in either before or after your trip to Latitudes because it's right next to the dock.
