We spent a week boating and camping around Lake Powell the last week of September. It was everything we imagined it would be and so much more!
Jared and his dad Glen planned this houseboat trip for us last Christmas on a whim. Nine months later we all met up in Farmington, New Mexico to make the 4-hour drive to Lake Powell together. We pulled Glen's boat behind us so that we could use it for fishing and finding the best beach.
Jayme, Josh, and our adorable nephew Wyatt also joined. Uncle Steve and Aunt Melanie were last-minute surprise additions to the crew and we were so happy they came along!
The boys pulled off not one, but two fish fries on the trip! We caught catfish, bass, and a few little guys we had to throw back. Josh was especially lucky (or skilled!) at catching a giant cat fish at night while Jared out-fished us all by catching ELEVEN fish in one day!
Luckily we had Glen to show us the ropes and let us use his tackle and rods too!
Lake Powell commands respect in so many ways. With hundreds of miles of coastline surrounded by canyons, it is by far the most beautiful experience I've had on the water.
We were lucky to share our second campsite with a curious and very hungry coyote. She was so hungry we even got to see her swim out to the lake and grab a dead fish! We left scraps out and without fail she nabbed them all. Melanie even carried a plate of steaks and chili out to a cliff for her dinner. Jayme and I laughed the whole way behind her on the walk over because she kept spilling bits of chili that left a perfect trail back to our boat.
It's possible it wasn't the best idea to leave scraps for a wild animal. But surrounded by cliffs and water there really didn't seem like much for the poor thing to eat. In all we left her steaks, chili, hot dogs, a fish head, and eggs. She came down and got every single bite.
The only members of the crew who didn't go down the slide were Glen and Melanie. That's right, even baby Wyatt and his nana Becky took the plunge. Steve even did it twice!
Jayme and I are probably tied for the most rides.
Camping is all about pulling your weight. Since I wasn't very good at catching fish or fixing the many moving parts of a houseboat, I tried to make myself useful with things more in my wheelhouse - food & drinks.
My two favorite drinks we made were mudslides and bloody marys. So yummy!!
We couldn't help but take pictures of everything, including ourselves and especially Wyatt!
While the views were amazing, the food delicious, and the drinks flowed freely, the best part of the trip was getting to spend an entire week with family. Living far away from the Fuller side of the family is tough because they are so darn fun.
We'll never forget this trip!
